Theatre as practice: tools for expression, connection, and change.

Theatre begins in the body. In the voice. In the encounter between people willing to step beyond what they already know.

Jubilo’s pedagogical work draws on years of research within theatrical training techniques, rooted in the tradition of avant-garde laboratory theatres and enriched by the personal practice of the company’s members. Our focus is on body-voice work, ensemble techniques and the creative process as a path toward personal expression.

From 2013 to 2023, Jubilo has been a partner of the Grotowski Institute, leading a training programme addressed to actors and performers. From 2019 the company
enriched its pedagogical proposal, developing a specific workshop line addressed to theatre operators (i.e. Theatre directors, workshop leaders), that are interested in applying their work within the social environment or with vulnerable groups.

Workshops for actors/performers

From 2013 the members of Jubilo have been leading pedagogical work in collaboration with important theatres and theatre academies in Poland and abroad. Main aim of the workshop proposal is to introduce and develop elements that could strengthen the individual practices and independence of each member of the group.

The workshops are tailored to the level of the group. One of the main objectives of the work is to challenge the participants to step out of their comfort zone in order to
access a freer creative space. The starting point of the work are usually elements connected to Ensemble techniques, partnership exercises and vocal techniques, including work on musicality, polyphonic and traditional songs. The participants, through the work with tools such as movement, text and body/voice work, are led in an explorative process that allows them to acquire new theatrical tools, opening a personal creative process.

Jubilo has been collaborating with theatrical institutions in Poland and abroad including the Grotowski Institute, Teatr Polski (Warsaw), AST – National Academy of Dramatic Arts (Wroclaw), the Teheran University of Dramatic Arts (IRAN), the National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Oslo (N), Teatr Chorea (PL), Song of the Goat Theatre (PL) and many others.

Workshop program for leaders/theatre operators

Thanks to the extended experience in applying theatrical techniques within social environment, from 2019 Jubilo opened a pedagogical path addressed to theatre operators (i.e. Theatre directors, workshop leaders) and work leaders interested in using theatrical and vocal techniques with non-theatrical groups.

The work developed within this frame is focused on the acquisition of theatrical and vocal techniques deeply rooted in the frame of physical theatre, as well as their application in performative and social contexts, building a thematic, physical and creative bridge with ‘Unlocking’, a project addressed to inmates, run since 2015 under the auspices of the Grotowski Institute and in collaboration with penitentiary institutions in Poland and abroad.

Within the frame of this workshop, the participants will have the possibility to experience and explore with the leaders the theatrical techniques applied in social context, the adaptation of these techniques to the groups of reference (i.e. prisons, refugee camps), propose exercises to the work groups, analyze these proposals and discuss ethics related to the work as well as contexts of reference.

An experience that allows the participants to actively challenge themselves to question the meaning of intervention within the social environment as well as redefine the role of the artist in our society.
